Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can I submit an old video?
No. Your video must be recorded exclusively for UNDEAD Showcase. Can I submit a stage recording?
No. Please submit a dedicated dance video. Is B-roll footage or PV-style video allowed?
Yes! Be creative with your video! Remember to keep it mostly dance-focused though. When can I publish the video I submitted to the showcase on my own pages?
You may post your video on or after October 12, 2026.What does "no MC/Extras outside of music overlay duration mean?
You are allowed to add MCing, skits, bloopers, B-roll, credits, or other extras in your video. However, they must all be overlaid on top of the song.
→【Example A】You can MC some ad-libs ("are you ready?") during an instrumental part of the song.
→【Example B】 You can add credits while the song is playing, like featured at 0:00-0:10 in this video. However, the end credits and extra scenes at 3:29-3:42 would NOT be allowed, and would therefore be edited out for the UNDEAD Showcase. Why is this a rule?
This showcase follows the likes of Odottemita Lives in Japan, which uses a system of grouping acts into performance blocks. MCing is done by hosts between sets of 4 performers. Sometimes the hosts interview the acts; sometimes they talk about the acts without them present.
This allows acts to focus on maximizing their performance ability into one song each! It's common for performers to change costumes to match various songs or collaboration units during their breaks. What is the submission grace period?
To prevent performers from relying on the grace period as the deadline, we will only grant them on a case-by-case basis.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can I submit an old video?
No. Your video must be recorded exclusively for UNDEAD Showcase.Would you prefer the video to be recorded as one clip, or can I submit several different sections?
It is preferred that you film the song straight through for ease of syncing audio -- even if you meander around while waiting for your next cue. However, it is not required. Can I participate if I wasn't accepted into the main showcase?
No. The encore is open to accepted performers only.Should I record as a soloist or as a group?
It is up to you. However, make sure if you are filming as a group that your video is recorded horizontally; if you film as soloists you must record vertically. Can I submit a stage recording?
No. Please submit a dedicated dance video. What is the grace period?
To prevent performers from relying on the grace period as the deadline, we will only grant them on a case-by-case basis.
What is Odottemita?
Odottemita (踊ってみた) is the Japanese tag for dance cover videosー especially to Vocaloid, J-pop, idol, vtuber, anisong, and utaite music. It’s the verb tense of the Japanese word for dance odoru (踊る) meaning “tried dancing” (ってみた)#踊ってみた or #odottemita can be used on videos of:
dance covers
original choreography
freestyle dancing
impromptu choreography
...and uploaded to any video-sharing website! The tag originated on Nico Nico Douga, but has expanded to YouTube, BiliBili, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and more!Try searching for dances to your favorite song by copying and pasting the japanese song title + the odottemita tag!
How do you use the term?
Kind of like how the verb “Let’s Play” is the video category title for gaming videos in Englishー
“Odottemita” is a verb used as the title of the dance video category in Japanese. Specifically on a video-sharing website called Nico Nico Douga (NND). So even though it’s a conjugated verb (that can be used normally), it can act as a noun when referring to the category!
It’s akin to titling a video:
“Me dancing to Luka Luka Night Fever”
For example:
【だしょリカにィ】紗痲【を踊ってみた】
【dashorikanii】shama【wo odottemita】
Would translate to:
【Kamodasho, Rika, and Kirenii】tried dancing to Shama

Where do the dances come from?
A mix of fanmade, odorite commissions, and official sources! Many viral dances are fanmade choreographies from the odottemita community! They are created out of love and passion (as a hobby) without receiving any payment. It’s important to properly credit the choreographers, especially when covering fan-made dances! Some of them are “official” too, commissioning odorite or the dance companies they work for. Many viral dances also come from "official" sources, where the dance comes from the internal studio or commissioned odorite & dance companies.Within the odottemita community (across NND, YouTube, BiliBili, etc) it’s considered unethical/taboo not to credit the original source of the dance. Even if it’s “official”, many dance coverists still credit the media where the dance comes from. Here's some examples of popular dances and their origins!
fanmade
odorite commission
idol & music
official franchise
Odorite
Odorite (踊り手) is the Japanese word for dancer. In the context of odottemita, it implies it’s one who uploads under the odottemita tag. Some odottemita uploaders prefer referring to themselves as 踊った人 (odottahito), or dancing person.Anyone can become an odorite! Whether you’re just starting out or already experienced, the community welcomes all levels of creativity and passion!
Are odorite considered idols?
In Japan, odorite do not consider themselves idols. Though both are mostly considered hobbies! Outside of odottemita, many odorite might work for dance companies as choreographers, motion-capture actors, or instructors for idols, anime, and vtubersー or they’re students and employees just like you!In Japan, it’s not just idolsー but retail store employees, concept cafe servers (i.e. maids), and of course odorite! They may engage in:
cheki / merch
image colors
penlights
call n response
fan service
Besides videos, odorite may do:
live shows
off kais
vlogs
livestreams
buppan / meet & greet
dance workshops
random dance play / relay dance
convention guesting
dance contest judging
cosplay
vocal covers / karaoke
Even though some do both dance and vocal (or even have a couple original music releases), most odorite do not consider themselves idols. Here are some examples!
Events are usually hosted by Nico Nico Douga, conventions, or odorite themselves. Most odorite are self-managed; so they can either get extremely parasocial with fan connections or set very strict boundaries. Often, odorite also do commissions or staff for each other. It’s uncommon, but some popular odorite are part of talent or influencer agencies, typically founded by an odorite themself.Even so, it’s still a hobby; odottemita isn’t profitable.
If some odorite sing, which identify as idols?
Consider themselves both odorite and idol:
DANCEROiD has released original music as well as had (credited) ghost singers for dance & vocal covers.
Aishibuto Penta labels herself as an odorite, idol, and vtuber!
Do not consider themselves idols:
××× project does dance and vocal activities, and even has an original song release, but despite being under an agency, they do not consider themselves an idol group! They officially label their group as a "creator group".
LAST RESORT does both dance and vocal performances, but does not use the "idol" label as a group (even though Penta does as a soloist).
Kyo-Z does vocal covers in addition to dance, but he states he wants to be known as "an odorite who can do many things" including dancing, singing, video editing, playing an instrument, cosplay, and more.
Anatashia once appeared on an idol TV program, causing some confusion amongst fans. They released a statement clarifying that they are not (and will not become) an idol group, but are purely an odottemita group.
SHARE LOCK HOMES (SLH) has a couple original music releases (primarily consisting of vocal and rap) on streaming platforms, but does not identify as an idol group.
Nico Nico Douga (NND)
ニコニコ動画 or Nico Nico Douga (NND) is a Japanese video-sharing website where the video catergory, Odottemita, is found. The first video uploaded under the odottemita category on NND was in 2007. Since then, the term has expanded its use across various social media platforms.Odottemita videos are most commonly uploaded to Nico Nico Douga, YouTube, BiliBili, or other video sharing websites. It is also used as a hashtag on TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and Twitter.
A fan of odottemita is called Odorite Otaku
ヲタク (Otaku) is someone who is a huge fan of something. When used in non-Japanese speaking communities, it typically connotes a fan of some sort of Japanese media (anime, manga, games, idols, odorite, vtubers, and the like). Some communities (such as Idol fans) used a shortened version "wota" (ヲタ). However, odorite in Japan refer to their fans as "odorite otaku".
